    Description

This lovely Victorian gold filled mourning brooch is a spinner - it revolves and can be worn with either side in front. One side is a circle of obsidian with a gold filled leaf in the center. The leaf has a round depression that probably once held a stone and now has some light scratches. The other side has a dark gray raised wavy pattern under glass. My first thought that it was crepe stone, glass molded in a wavy pattern and patented in the 1880's in American for use in mourning jewelry. Crepe stone was usually thicker and not as symmetrical in design, however and also not mounted under glass. I think that this is an embossed piece of paper of cloth which was intended as a backing for a photo which the owner could place over it. I was afraid to confirm this by taking the pin apart. In any case it has a very pleasing look without a photo.  it measures 1 1/4 inches across the center at the flowers on each side. The finish has some minor wear, and the seam of the gold filled bezel is visible at the top edge.
