Today we are pleased to offer for sale a fabulous antique French confit pot!
    French
    pots confits
were originally used for storing preserves throughout south west France. Before refrigeration a confit pot was a standard in southern French kitchens utilized to cook and preserve duck in duck fat. The pot itself is quite recognizable with its glazed ochre/yellow top and earthenware bottom. Most will recognize it as the vase in Vincent Van Gogh's sunflower painting. The top half of the ceramic pot was usually but not always colored a mustard yellow. The bottom half of the pots were left unglazed because the preservation process called for the pot to be covered in cloth and buried in the ground up to the glaze line. Glazed pieces that were buried tended to have the glaze peel off hence they didn't glaze the lower half of the pot.
This beautiful 19th century example is nicely crafted and detailed. It features an amphora-shaped earthenware body with two flat curved handles and lustrous yellow and ochre glaze. This confit pot has a truly wonderful and warm time-earned patina with great detail.
